Gold Coast condo once owned by John Cusack sells for $950,000

A 57th-floor Gold Coast condominium that actor and Evanston native John Cusack once owned for a decade sold on Oct. 25 for $950,000.

Though a Hollywood star, Cusack always has owned a home in Chicago. He now owns a 45th-floor condo in a Near North Side tower that he bought through a trust in 2005 for nearly $2.9 million.

Cusack in 1996 paid $453,500 for the 57th-floor Gold Coast condominium unit in the Elysees Condominiums building, and he then sold it in 2006 for $885,000. The family to whom Cusack sold that 57th-floor unit then purchased the condo next door, late in 2006, for $445,000 and combined them, and the two units have been together ever since.

A subsequent family bought the combined condo in 2013 for nearly $1.1 million. That family listed it for sale in 2021 for nearly $1.2 million before taking it off the market. That family then relisted it in June 2022 for about $1.2 million and in October 2022 cut the condo’s asking price to nearly $1.1 million.

The condo has three bathrooms, a remodeled primary bedroom suite with a sitting room and a wet bar with a beverage cooler, and a primary bathroom with an oversize shower, a double sink vanity and designer tiling. The unit’s kitchen has stone and stainless-steel countertops, an island with breakfast bar seating, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Bosch dishwasher.

“The sale of (this condo) is a testament to the adaptability of both sellers and buyers,” listing agent Shannon Kelly of Compass told Elite Street. She listed the unit with her colleague Melanie Giglio.

“Despite the closing price falling below their 2013 investment, the sellers’ understanding of the current downtown condo market ensures that, in this deal, both sides come out as winners,” Kelly said. “In my view, this sale truly exemplifies the essence of a real estate win-win.”

Public records do not yet identify the buyers.

The combined condo had a $22,040 property tax bill in the 2022 tax year.
