Google’s Gemini AI App Gets Major Upgrades: Smarter Research, Personalised AI, More

Google is rolling out a wave of enhancements to its Gemini AI app, making it more intuitive, powerful, and personalised. The latest update introduces an upgraded research assistant, deeper personalisation, and expanded connectivity with Google apps — all available for users to explore, with several features accessible at no cost.

Faster Thinking, Bigger Context Window

A key highlight of this update is the improved 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model. This version introduces file uploads and an expanded 1-million-token context window for Gemini Advanced users, significantly enhancing the model’s ability to analyse complex information.

With better efficiency and reasoning capabilities, the AI can now break down intricate prompts into structured steps for more precise responses.

Deep Research Gets a Smarter AI Upgrade

Google first introduced Deep Research in December as a tool to automate online research, sifting through vast amounts of information in minutes. Now, it’s getting a major boost with the latest Flash Thinking Experimental model, allowing Gemini to improve its research quality across all stages — from searching and analyzing to compiling detailed multi-page reports. Users will also get a real-time view of how Gemini processes research queries, offering transparency into how it finds and organises information.

This upgraded Deep Research is rolling out globally in 45+ languages, with limited free access for standard users and expanded availability for Gemini Advanced subscribers.

Personalised AI That Adapts to You

Gemini is evolving into a more personalised assistant, now capable of drawing insights from a user’s Google Search history (with permission). This means smarter restaurant suggestions, travel advice tailored to past searches, and more relevant recommendations based on user preferences.

Users can enable or disable Personalization (Experimental) through the settings, maintaining control over their data.

Smarter Connections with Google Apps

Google is also expanding Gemini’s connectivity with Google Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Photos, allowing users to issue complex, multi-step commands. For instance, a single request like “Find an easy cookie recipe, add ingredients to my shopping list, and locate an open grocery store nearby” will be executed seamlessly across multiple apps.

Google Photos integration is coming soon, enabling users to retrieve details like trip highlights or document expiry dates through AI-powered image analysis.

Custom AI Assistants for Everyone

One of the most exciting additions is Gems, a feature that lets users create their own custom AI assistants — whether it’s a language tutor, meal planner, or workout coach. These personalised AI tools, previously available to select users, are now rolling out for free. Users can create their own Gems by providing instructions and even uploading files for reference.

With these latest updates, Gemini is positioning itself as a more adaptive, intelligent, and deeply integrated AI assistant — bringing both powerful research tools and everyday conveniences to users worldwide.
