Here are the median rent prices throughout Chicago

Among major cities, Chicago has one of the priciest and most competitive rental markets in the country, with the median price of a residential rental sitting at just under $1,850 a month.

Much to the dismay of Chicago renters, that number is only on the up and up. The Windy City saw a 5.7% increase in rent prices from September 2022 to September 2023, the country’s third-biggest increase year-over-year, behind Providence, Rhode Island, and Hartford, Connecticut, according to Zillow’s Observed Rent Index.

Still, across the city’s 59 ZIP codes, the price of rentals varies greatly, with median monthly rents ranging from $1,000 to close to $3,000. Generally, prices are higher closer to downtown and in neighborhoods on the Far Northwest Side, and lower on the West Side and South Side of Chicago.

As of September, the ZIP code with the most expensive median rent was 60611, clocking in at $2,965 a month. This ZIP code covers parts of the Gold Coast and Streeterville neighborhoods, areas known for their luxury real estate listings.

But if you’re looking for something more affordable than the Loop and Near North Side, try 60649. Encompassing the South Shore neighborhood, the median rent in this ZIP code is $1,000 a month — the cheapest within city limits.

Here’s a complete look at the median rent prices throughout Chicago’s ZIP codes, using data from RentHub. Median prices represent data from all residential property types — apartment buildings, condos, duplexes, houses, multifamily homes and townhouses — as of September.
