Afghanistan in T20 World Cup semifinal: Afghanistan’s 47-run defeat against India in their T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match on Thursday (June 20) dented their campaign. Afghanistan had been remarkable in the group stage, losing just one out of four matches. After remaining undefeated against New Zealand, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan faced a crushing loss against West Indies in their final group stage match.

In Super 8s, Afghanistan are in Group 1 alongside India, Australia and Bangladesh. Two teams from this group will make it to semi-finals.

Explained: How Afghanistan can qualify for T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals

In their first T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Group 1 match against India on Thursday (June 20), Afghanistan were bowled out for 134 while chasing 182 for the win.

Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan team will now face Australia on Sunday, June 23, and Bangladesh on Tuesday, June 25, in their remaining two Super 8 matches.

For Afghanistan to have a chance at qualifying for the semi-finals, they must win their remaining Super 8 matches against Bangladesh and Australia.

Afghanistan currently has zero points in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8s Group 1 points table. Wins over Bangladesh and Australia would move them to 4 points. However, even with 4 points, it might not be enough to assure Afghanistan a semi-final berth, as the final standings will depend on net run rate (NRR) and the outcomes of other matches.

There’s a great chance that multiple teams end up with 4 points in Group 1 at the end of the Super 8 matches. Afghanistan will need to beat both Australia and Bangladesh by significant margins to boost their net run rate (NRR). This would improve their chances of securing a semi-final berth in the T20 World Cup 2024.

T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8s: Group 1 Updated Points Table

Teams Matches  Wins  Losses  Points  Net Run Rate (NRR)
1. Australia 1 1 0 2 +2.471
2. India 1 1 0 2 +2.350
3. Afghanistan 1 0 1 0 -2.350
4. Bangladesh  1 0 1 0 -2.471

At present, India and Australia are the two teams in Super 8s Group 1 who have the best chance of qualifying for T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final.
