E-cigarette company Juul Labs will pay Illinois more than $67.6 million as part of a $462 million multistate settlement over allegations that the company targeted its products to teens.

“This settlement is a culmination of several years of focused efforts in our respective states to hold Juul accountable for its leading role in the youth vaping epidemic,” said Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, during a news conference Wednesday. “For me, it’s quite personal because the product had entered my own home because of my teenagers.”

In Illinois, the money will go toward treatment and awareness, he said. Illinois filed suit against Juul in 2019.

Juul said in a statement Wednesday that the settlement money will help “combat underage use and develop cessation programs and reflect our current business practices, which were implemented as part of our companywide reset in the fall of 2019.”

As part of the settlement, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York and the District of Columbia will also receive money.

More to come.
