India, EU Summit To Be Held In 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated António Costa on the assumption of charge as the president of the European Council.

According to an official statement, Costa made a telephone call to PM Modi on Tuesday and the two leaders noted the substantive progress made in the India-EU Strategic Partnership over the past decade.

The two leaders agreed to work closely together towards further bolstering the ties, including in the areas of trade, technology, investment, green energy and digital space, the statement read further. 

During the conversation, Modi and Costa underlined the need for an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India- EU FTA and looked forward to the next  India-EU Summit to be held in India at a mutually convenient time. 

“India and the EU are natural partners,” Modi said in a post on X following the telephone conversation.

“We are committed to working closely together to further strengthen the India-EU Strategic Partnership, including in the areas of technology, green energy, digital space, trade and investments,” he added. 

Costa also took to X and said he had known Modi since 2017 when he was invited to Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

“India is one of our main global partners. It is time to boost our relations and to engage in a new strategic agenda,” he said. 

Mentioning the phone call, Costa said the two leaders “addressed shared concerns, focusing on security, international law, and ways to collaborate in tackling geopolitical challenges in Europe and in Asia.”

Hervé Delphin, Ambassador of the Delegation of European Union to India also noted the call between the two leaders. 

“Important call today between leaders @eucopresident António Costa and PM  @narendramodi confirming the mutual  EU-India ambition to develop together a new joint strategic agenda and hold an EU-India Summit in 2025 – hosted by India,” Delphin said in a post on X.
