The Consulate General of India in Shanghai hosted two high-profile business events this week, underscoring India’s rising global economic influence and its expanding role in international value chains. The sessions, held on March 25 and 27, brought together Indian business leaders, professionals, and members of the diaspora in China to celebrate India’s growth story and explore emerging global supply chain trends.

On March 27, the Consulate, in collaboration with the Indian Association Business Council (IABC), organised a ‘Business Meet & Greet’ under the theme ‘India Inc. Growth Stories: Conquering the World’ on its campus. The session featured prominent Indian executives based in China, including Sitanshu Mohanty (CEO, State Bank of India Shanghai), Suneet Puri (Country Head, TCS China), Kripa Ranjan (VP & Head of Projects, Adani Energy Resources Shanghai), Boski Gokani (Legal Advisor, India Desk, DP Legal), and Jaivardhan Sharma (CEO, Shineroad India).

In his opening remarks, Consul General Pratik Mathur highlighted India’s macroeconomic fundamentals, noting its achievement of becoming a USD 4.3 trillion economy with a “100% GDP growth” over the last decade. He stressed that India is now the 5th largest economy globally, and said “we are on course to become the 3rd largest”, driven by wide-ranging reforms in manufacturing, logistics, finance, and infrastructure.

The Consul General highlighted India’s expanding footprint in global value chains, particularly through its achievements in export-driven manufacturing across sectors such as electronics, mobile devices, pharmaceuticals, and white goods. He called on Indian businesses to lead the charge as ambassadors of ‘Brand India’, showcasing the country’s capabilities on the world stage.

Speakers at the event shared insights from their respective industries — banking, IT, energy, legal services, and food & beverage — highlighting their companies’ contributions to India’s expanding global footprint and sharing personal leadership lessons from operating in the Chinese market.

Session On Global Supply Chain

Earlier in the week, on March 25, the consulate supported another key business forum titled ‘China Plus X: The New Global Supply Chain’, organised by the India Business Club under the China-India Community, a local organisation. The keynote speaker was Aditi Rasquinha, CEO of DHL Freight Forwarding, Greater China, who spoke on evolving global supply chain strategies amid changing geopolitical and economic dynamics.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul General Mathur emphasised India’s economic strides, citing the IMF’s latest data placing India’s GDP at USD 4.3 trillion. He outlined the impact of government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, which he said has spurred growth in sectors like electronics, pharmaceuticals, and white goods. He noted that logistics and infrastructure transformation were making India an attractive destination for global companies reassessing their supply chain dependencies.

The session concluded with a Q&A session, attended by professionals from across the logistics, manufacturing, textiles, and consultancy sectors.
