Several Northwest Indiana communities are among 64 statewide to share $50 million in the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Improvement Program.

The funding, announced Friday, is part of INDOT’s goal to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes on Indiana roads by 25% over the next 10 years.

Municipalities can use the funding for updated warning devices, signs or pavement markings, pedestrian and crosswalk improvements, traffic signal enhancements or adjustments, and improvements at rail crossings, among others.

“It takes all of us to make an impact on roadway safety,” said INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith. “This is just one way we are engaging with local agencies and making them part of the larger conversation. These are proven countermeasures that will enhance safety on local roads across the state.”

Here’s a list of the grant winners:

Cedar Lake: $171,000

Hammond: $540,000

LaPorte: $1,971,000

Lake County: $69,930

Porter County: $1,257,777

St. John: $355,500

East Chicago: $450,000

Jasper County: $383,423

Newton County: $90,000

Valparaiso: $760,000
