The cause of a fatal Saturday fire on Defiance Avenue in Portage remains under investigation, according to the Portage Fire Department.
Officials have not identified the victim.
At approximately 11:14 a.m. Feb. 16, emergency units responded to a reported house fire on Defiance Avenue, according to a fire department release.
Fire crews found a working fire when they arrived and promptly entered the residence, where they located one of the homeowners inside. A second homeowner was reported to also be inside the residence.
Firefighters worked diligently to locate the second individual and extinguish the flames. Firefighters located the second homeowner who had succumbed to her injuries, officials said.
“Authorities extend their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
