IPL 2025 Retention Policy: BCCI have announced the new set of rules and policies for players and auction, as all the 10 franchises are gearing up for the upcoming IPL 2025. The IPL committee have taken strict action against overseas player who end up opting out of the tournament after being bought by his respective franchise at the auction table.

As per the new rules, overseas players have to now register themselves first in-order to feature at the auction table. Also, if, for any reason, they make themselves unavailable before the start of the tournament, a ban of 2 years will be imposed on them from participation in the richest franchise league of cricket.

The following two rules in the rule book justify the above-mentioned case:

  • Any Overseas Player will have to register for the Big Auction. In case the overseas player doesn’t register, then he will be ineligible to register in the following year’s player auction.
  • Any player who registers in the player auction and after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 Seasons.

IPL Franchises To Get A Purse Of INR 120 Crore For IPL Auction 2025

The purse, which was earlier at INR 110 crore, now receives a boost of INR 10 crore, as IPL franchises will be heading into the auction with a increased purse, 5 retentions, and the re-introduced RIGHT TO MATCH card.

The franchises are also set to have an increase in their performance pay not just for IPL 2025, but for the 2026 and 2027 seasons as well.

Have a look at the official rule:

“The auction purse for the franchises has been set at INR 120 Crore for IPL 2025. The total salary cap will now consist of auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees. Previously in 2024, the total salary cap (auction purse + incremental performance pay) was Rs. 110 Crs which will now be Rs. 146 Crs (2025), Rs. 151 Crs (2026) and Rs. 157 Crs (2027).”
