Karan Johar Reacts To ‘Misconceptions’ Of His Films Being About Rich People

New Delhi: Karan Johar is busy promoting ‘Kill’, an action thriller that recently had its global premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). In a conversation with Guneet Monga following the movie’s premiere, Karan discussed against the idea that Dharma Productions primarily produces family movies and movies about “rich people.”

Karan was questioned about how he signed on a project like Kill, which was so different from the movies his production label produces, during the post-screening conversation with the audience that followed the premiere of the action thriller. Karan responded, “I have been trying to erase this idea that Dharma Productions is plagued by because I still get asked ‘Oh you only create family pictures’ or ‘you only produce NRI-friendly films…or ‘You make films about rich people. It’s really ridiculous that you get slotted.”

“You are condemned by perception,” he continued, making a playful reference to filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap. “I would get along with people a lot better if my name was Karan Kashyap.” It’s as though my name has sealed my fate. Black Friday, Dev D, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Ugly are just a few of Anurag Kashyap’s films that include gritty, raw people and stories. It’s interesting to note that Karan Johar also played the bad guy in Bombay Velvet (2013) by Anurag Kashyap.

‘Kill’ is a collaborative production of Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment and Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. In this Nikhil Nagesh Bhatt-directed action thriller, Lakshya makes his acting debut alongside Raghav Juyal and Tanya Maniktala. The movie opened to rapturous praise from both crowds and critics during its premiere at TIFF.

On July 28, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, Karan Johar’s most recent film, was released in theatres. Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, and Dharmendra all appeared in the family drama. The movie received positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, and it quickly amassed 340 crores in revenue globally.
