The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy arrested three people who had apparently just stolen a motor vehicle.

The incident happened at 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 9 as the sergeant was on patrol in the North Chicago area.

The officer was near the intersection of Illinois Route 41 and Casimir Pulaski when he clocked a northbound Hyundai Sonata going 93 mph in a 55 mph zone.

The sergeant was able to make a traffic stop and noticed that the rear passenger window on the car was shattered and the steering column was damaged. Police said the vehicle had just been stolen from an apartment complex in the 500 block of Lakehurst Avenue in Waukegan.

Police took the driver, a 16-year-old Waukegan boy, into custody along with two passengers, a 20-year-old Chicago man and an 18-year-old Waukegan man.

Dial 211

Feb. 11 was Super Bowl Sunday, but it was also the day authorities call attention to many services available to residents that are just a three-number phone call – or text — away.

It marked the fifth annual 211 Day. People can call 211 at any time, and they will be connected to someone who can help with a wide range of essential health and human services.

Since the service started in 2019, the 211 program has answered more than 250,000 calls for housing, shelter, rent and utility assistance, mental health help, food and health care aid. It is a service of United Way of Lake County.

“The Lake County Board is committed to our partnership with United Way of Lake County so this critically important service is always available to residents when they need it most,” County Board Chair Sandy Hart said.

People can also access the service by texting their Zip code to 898-211.

“We are grateful to Lake County government for their steadfast partnership and generous support of our 211 service, as well as the many partners and supporters who help make 211 possible for Lake County,” said Kristi Long, president and CEO of United Way of Lake County. “211 Day is a wonderful opportunity to continue to raise awareness of this vital resource that helps people, improves lives and strengthens our community.”

Tobacco checks

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said it cited clerks at three establishments during a January sweep for tobacco law compliance.

During the month, the police checked 74 businesses to ensure that they displayed appropriate signage and did not sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21. Seventy-one did not. The three offending businesses included two convenience stores in Beach Park and a smoke store in Gurnee.

The compliance checks are funded through a tobacco enforcement grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services. The checks will take place throughout the year, police said.
