Liberal Arts Education in India: The MIT-WPU Approach

Liberal Arts Education in India has deep historical roots that predate modern pedagogical systems. The ancient educational system of the Indian subcontinent pioneered the comprehension of a Liberal Arts framework by incorporating various disciplines, such as philosophy, politics, and astronomy. Its transdisciplinary approach laid a strong foundation for developing critical thinking among knowledge seekers.

Post-independence, this approach continued with the introduction of three-year Honours programs, particularly in social sciences, behavioral sciences, and humanities. This standardization created rigid academic boundaries, prioritizing discipline-specific qualifications over holistic development. Today, nearly 80% of institutes still follow the three-year model, valued for its legacy and perceived reliability, limiting interdisciplinary exploration once central to formal education.

Presently, the National Education Policy 2020 has overhauled the long-awaited pedagogical elements of the Indian education system. Accordingly, the dormant Liberal Arts pedagogy has also revitalized itself and is being adopted by many institutes nationwide. Liberal Arts education offers unprecedented flexibility for students to pursue their diverse academic interests. This transformation provides them with an opportunity to pursue not only their domain of interest but also their allied disciplines. The rigid compartmentalisations can now be easily navigated, broadening the career prospects of the future generation of undergraduate degree holders.

Another critical aspect of the NEP is adopting a four-year Honours degree program (with a non-honours exit option after the completion of the third year). The introduction of a fourth year enhances the scope of the student’s ability to choose between aligning themselves with either industry or academia/research. It is visible across the educational framework of India that NEP and its derivatives are being adopted to marry the traditional/indigenous and modern westernized systems of imparting knowledge.

The Department of Liberal Arts at Dr. Vishwanath Karad MIT World Peace University is one such institution that prides itself on swiftly embracing NEP and modernizing the dormant format of Liberal education to cater to contemporary times. While the BA Liberal Arts degree offered by the department is relatively new, it strives to become enriched with the progression of each academic year. Incorporating practical experience with theoretical knowledge and interdisciplinary learning through a pair of Major offerings significantly enhances students’ holistic development. The Department of Liberal Arts at MIT-WPU maps a focused trajectory through innovative ways of exploring the Liberal Arts pedagogy.

In most institutions, disciplines such as Psychology, Sociology, Economics, and Anthropology are offered as major and minor baskets under the Liberal Arts degree. This often leads to an unintended hierarchy where major disciplines are perceived as superior to minor ones. To break this convention, the Department of Liberal Arts at MIT-WPU presents an innovative Double-Majors approach, where both disciplines are given equal weightage.

MIT-WPU strategically offers a limited but uniquely curated blend of five options as Majors (any two to be chosen): Applied Psychology, Applied Economics, International Relations with foreign languages, Society and Crime, Multimedia, Advertising, and Branding. By structuring these as multidisciplinary combinations, they stand apart from their conventional counterparts offered elsewhere, such as Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, and Political Science. Essentially, students gain broader and deeper knowledge in a less fragmented manner.

Most importantly, career opportunities for students pursuing the four-year Honours course in BA Liberal Arts at MIT-WPU are significantly enhanced. From postgraduate education in India or abroad to diverse career pathways in the chosen Double Majors, the possibilities are truly limitless. Additionally, students develop critical skills such as cross-cultural communication, research methodology, and problem-solving abilities—skills essential for navigating today’s globalized world. Collaborations with industry-leading organizations, assistance in securing internships, and publication support further strengthen the program’s impact.

To summarize, in today’s rapidly evolving world, education must transcend traditional academics. It should ignite critical thinking, foster cultural empathy, and empower students to tackle societal challenges with both insight and innovation. At MIT-WPU, we are committed to this vision, ensuring that our Liberal Arts graduates are equipped not only with knowledge but also with the ability to contribute meaningfully to society.
