An official stated on Sunday that a man reportedly involved in cow slaughter was killed and another was injured in an exchange of fire with police in Rampur district, news agency PTI reported. While investigating a cow slaughter case in the Patwai police station area, police obtained information that the accused will arrive in Moradabad late Saturday night in a car, according to Rampur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi. The Patwai police station put up a roadblock and while examining automobiles saw a vehicle speeding from Moradabad. The car, however, turned around and ran when it saw the roadblock, according to the officer.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, which toppled near the Milak police station. The two accused got out of the car and began shooting at the officers, who replied in self-defense. Both of the accused were hurt in the exchange of fire and were transferred to the district hospital, where Sajid (23) died during treatment, according to the SP.

The second accused, Bablu, is being treated at a hospital.

According to Dwivedi, both Sajid and Bablu are Moradabad natives with a long criminal background.

A case has been filed under section 307 of the IPC (attempt to kill) and the Arms Act. The car, as well as country-made firearms, ammo, an electronic weighing machine, and cow slaughtering equipment, were confiscated, according to the SP.

Several incidences of cow slaughter have occurred in the region, according to the police, Indian Express reported.

Earlier this year, the UP Police Department initiated ‘Operation Conviction’ to combat criminals and mafias in the state. Authorities believe that the move would expedite the prosecution of crimes recorded under the POCSO Act, as well as those involving cow slaughter, religious conversion, rape, and murder.
