Skokie’s July Fourth parade managed to dodge most of the rain drops, but not the gray sky as off-and-on rain dogged the northern suburbs Friday morning.
Starting at noon, the parade floats and contingents marched from Oakton College, up Lincoln Avenue, turned north near the Skokie theater and then went east on Oakton Street to Oakton Park.

The suburb is often praised for its diversity, and it included units from various ethnic groups, including Assyrian, Filipino, Latino, Jewish and others.

There were also an assortment of political candidates, including some of the approximate dozen running to succeed Illinois’ 9th District U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, who is retiring, in Congress.

Candidates Bushra Amiwala and Laura Fine were among those who high-tailed it from the Glenview July Fourth parade, which started at 11:20, to Skokie’s parade.
