Free tests, affordable shots available Saturday at Walmart

Walmarts nationwide, including the one at 2552 W. 75th St. in Naperville, will be participating in the annual Walmart Wellness Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

As part of the event, customers can receive free glucose, cholesterol, BMI and blood pressure screenings and affordable vaccines for the flu, HPV, tetanus, hepatitis, pneumonia, COVID-19, chicken pox, shingles and more. Some stores will offer vision screenings.

More than 5 million free health screenings have been done at wellness days since 2014. For more information, go to www.walmart.com/wellnesshub.

Naperville Citizen Police Academy applications due Aug. 14

Applications for the 10-week Citizen Police Academy are due Wednesday, Aug. 14, and will be considered in the order they are received.

The free program, offered by the Naperville Police Department, will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays between Sept. 18 and Nov. 20 at the police department, 1350 Aurora Ave.

The academy gives residents a chance to learn about police operations through lectures, interactive discussions and hands-on demonstrations, a news release said. Topics to be covered include patrols, investigations, forensics and special response.

Limited to 24 people, participants must be at least 18 and live or work in Naperville. A criminal background check will be conducted on each applicant.

Applications and waivers are available at www.naperville.il.us/cpa or by emailing PacettiJ@naperville.il.us.

Applications can be turned by email, via fax at 630-305-7004 or through the mail or in person at the Naperville Police Department.

Park district planning celebrations for renovated playgrounds

The Naperville Park District will officially open two newly renovated playgrounds in August.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, for the Central Park playground at 104 E. Benton Ave., with a rain date set for Wednesday, Aug. 7.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, the new South Pointe Park at 5504 Switch Grass Lane will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting. In the event of inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 14.

In addition to getting chance to check out the parks’ new features, light refreshments will be served, a news release said.

Annual Junior Tour de Naperville to be held at Wolf’s Crossing Park

Children ages 3 to 12 can ride their big wheels, tricycles or bikes around a 1.2-mile path during the Naperville Park District’s 8th annual Junior Tour de Naperville, a local take on the Tour de France for kids.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at Wolf’s Crossing Community Park, 3252 Wolf’s Crossing Road. Children ages 3 to 5 will start the course at 9 a.m. followed by children ages 6 to 8 at 10 a.m. and 9 to 12 at 11 a.m.

Older children are challenged to ride the course as many times as possible. All participants must wear a helmet. Parents can cheer from the sidelines or accompany their children around the course.

Registration is required. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and there will be stops along the course for water and snacks.
