Foursome wins Senior Fall Scramble with score of 59

A team made up of three Naperville residents and a South Elgin man took the top prize in the 2025 Senior Fall Scramble, according to the Naperville Park District.

The golf event held Sept. 11 at the Naperbrook Golf Course consisted of 144 area golfers age 55 and older who competed in teams of four, a news release said.

Members of the first-place team, made up of Naperville residents Paul Dervin, Kenneth Jacobs and Kevin Segebarth and South Elgin resident Duane Meaux, had a score of 59 in the 18-hole tournament.

In second place with a score of 60 were Mark Baskiewicz, Thomas O’Dekirk, Ron Selby and Patrick Brunory. Third-place winners, scoring 61, were Steve Schwager, Woody Broaders, Michael Collard and Robert Fredian.

As a twist in this year’s tourney, teams had to play six holes from the blue tees, six from the white tees and six from the green tees, the release said.

Naperville police, fire departments planning open house

The Naperville police and fire departments will hold their annual Public Safety Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the public safety campus, 1380 Aurora Ave.

In addition to safety information, activities and giveaways, the fire department will conduct a technical rescue and show how they battle a flashover fire and the police will conduct a mock traffic stop and drunken driving arrest, show off their K-9 unit, and demonstrate drones and tasers, a news release said.

Guests can also check out police and fire equipment and vehicles, talk with emergency personnel, dust for fingerprints and learn how to call 911, the release said.

Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog will make an appearance. Food trucks will be on site from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

National Karate & Martial Arts, 1795 S. Washington St., Naperville, has been named one of the Top 100 Small Businesses in America by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Owner and founder Cristian Nelson will travel to Washington, D.C., next month to accept the honor during the chamber’s 100 Award Ceremony and Small Business Summit.

The karate school, which also has locations in Aurora, Bartlett, Roselle and South Elgin, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. It was recognized for its positive community impact, excellence in martial arts education and strong local presence, a news release said.

St. Elizabeth Seton Church to host diaper, toilet paper drive

A diaper and toilet paper collection event to benefit West Suburban Community Pantry and Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28.

Items will be collected in the front parking lot of St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 2220 Lisson Road.

The drive is hosted by the St. Elizabeth Seton St. Vincent de Paul Society to respond to the growing needs of area food pantries. With limited budgets, pantries are often forced to focus solely on food, leaving families struggling to afford items such as diapers and toilet paper, the society said in a news release.

Financial contributions are also welcome.
