For the third time in less than two weeks, police have made a firearm-related arrest in the Naperville Topgolf parking lot.

Edward Lamont Coffey Jr., 29 of Chicago, was arrested outside the 3211 Odyssey Court facility Friday night on several felony charges, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possessing a firearm with a suspended Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and failing to store 10 to 15 grams of cannabis in his vehicle in a childproof, sealed or odorless container, according to police and DuPage County Circuit Court records.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 3.

Coffey’s arrest brings the number of firearm-related arrests made outside the Naperville Topgolf since August 2023 to 22.

Coffey was taken into custody last Friday after what started as a cannabis possession investigation, according to Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow.

Officers were in the business’ parking lot in squad cars when one of them observed Coffey exiting a white Mercedes SUV while smoking what they believed to be cannabis, Krakow said. Officers exited their squads and approached on foot. Their investigation into the cannabis led to a search of Coffey’s vehicle.

Police’s search yielded a 9mm handgun that was recovered from a backpack, Krakow said. Coffey’s FOID card was suspended and he did not have a Concealed Carry License (CCL), Krakow added.

Coffey’s arrest comes just a week after Ivann Mitchell Altman-McCray, 31, of Chicago, was arrested Aug. 9 at the Naperville Topgolf lot on three misdemeanor firearm-related charges, and nearly two weeks after Camarion Jai Cobbins, 19 of Huntsville, Alabama, was arrested July 28 outside the business on one charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

In addition to the ongoing string of Topgolf arrests, police also made an arrest on firearm charges outside of Naperville’s Bowlero at 1515 Aurora Ave. last Friday, Krakow confirmed.

Bowlero, though not to the extent of Topgolf, has sporadically seen firearm-related arrests made out of its parking lot. In the most recent, Ahmaad Mauraice Turner, 19 of Plainfield, was arrested on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm at the Bowlero lot just after 11 p.m. Friday.

Officers were performing an extra patrol of the Bowlero lot at the request of the business’ manager, who had observed subjects drinking and smoking in its lot, Krakow said.

Police arrived and their investigation led them to a group of cars and individuals, Krakow said. As their investigation continued, they discovered a firearm, and Turner was arrested and charged.

Including Turner, police have made three firearm-related arrests at the Bowlero lot since January.
