Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], December 19: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is considered to be one of the most prevalent noncommunicable disease epidemics globally as well as in India. Treatment of CKD, particularly at its advanced stage – ESRD (end-stage renal disease), consumes a huge proportion of health resources, which could be beyond the reach of the average Indian. Hence focusing on prevention would be the key to address the issue, said Dr Pratim Sengupta, Founder and MD & CEO, Nephro Care India Limited.
Kidney disease is a growing epidemic in India, with one in eleven individuals potentially at risk of Renal failure. Diabetes and hypertension are the leading causes, contributing to over 30 per cent of chronic kidney cases. Pain-killer abuse ranks third as a significant factor. The disease often progresses silently; with symptoms emerging only after significant kidney damage has occurred.
India adds close to 2.5 lakh new patients every year to the pool of people requiring dialysis support due to advanced kidney failure. There are around seven crore patients suffering from various chronic kidney diseases.
Nephro Care India, which got listed on the NSE Emerge platform in July this year, has been undertaking several initiatives with a view to combat this crisis through prevention, early detection, and comprehensive renal care. We have no regulation for painkillers, antibiotics and hence the burden of kidney disease is increasing exponentially in this country,” Dr Sengupta said, on the occasion of the company’s third anniversary where it hosted a Walkathon on Sunday.
The Walkathon titled ‘Walk for Health, Walk for Your Kidneys’, which highlighted the importance of lifestyle changes, especially regular exercise, in maintaining kidney health, witnessed the participation of over 400 people. Prominent figures such as Mr. RamKrishna Jaiswal (Consulate of Maldives), Mr. Dipendu Biswas (Eminent Footballer), Mr. Arindam Sil (Actor, Film Director, and Producer), Mr. Srinjay Bose (Owner & Editor-in-Chief, Sangbad Pratidin) and Mr. Ashish Mittal
(Director, Golden Tulip Hotel) graced the event with their presence.
