Niles village trustees voted July 25 to rebate up to $3 million in sales taxes over a decade to the Berman Auto Group as it undertakes a large renovation of the Star Nissan dealership on the 5700 block of Touhy Avenue.

The agreement provides for an even split of sales tax revenue between the dealership and the village for the first five years before switching to a 60%-40% split between the parties for the second five years. Throughout both periods, the village will automatically lay claim to the first $50,000 worth of sales tax revenue, according to the agreement presented to village board members.

According to a memo from village staff to the board, the dealership plans to separate the entrances for the Star Nissan and Infiniti customers in a new facade.

Niles entered a similar agreement with Golf Green Motor Sales in 2021 when it sought to start a Chevrolet dealership at the intersection of Golf Road and Greenwood Avenue, according to previous reporting.

Niles’ sales tax revenue is unusually strong among its peer suburbs, forming the base of its operating revenue. In 2022, the village collected more than $31 million in sales tax revenue, per village information.

Representatives of Berman Star Nissan did not immediately respond to phone and emailed requests for comment from Pioneer Press.
