Representatives with Naperville Unit Education Association and Naperville School District 203 met with a mediator Tuesday to continue contract negotiations, but did not reach a deal, union officials said.
Ross Berkley, president of the NUEA, said in a statement that there was meaningful discussions and positive steps forward.
“While we are not finished, we are hopeful we can reach an agreement that puts our students first and is equitable for all educators,” his statement released Tuesday night said. “This community deserves stability in our schools. We are cautiously optimistic that with continued collaboration we can finalize a fair contract that values our educators and supports our students.”
The union, which represents more than 1,500 teachers and licensed staff, has been working without a contract since it expired June 30. The district and union have been bargaining since February.
On Aug. 13, union members voted to authorize a strike if necessary. The earliest the teachers could strike is Monday, Aug. 25.
Bargaining sessions are planned for Wednesday and Thursday.
