One dead after Friday morning fire in Union Township

One person died after a fire early Friday morning in the Shorewood Forest subdivision in Union Township, police said.

The Porter County Sheriff’s Department was called around 3:05 a.m. to assist the Union Township Fire Department at the scene in the 400 block of Shorewood Court, according to a release from Sgt. Ben McFalls, the department’s public information officer.

Police and firefighters were able to remove residents from the burning structure, McFalls said in a release, though one person transported to a hospital in Cook County, Illinois, later died.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, as well as the cause of death for the fire victim.
