India vs Great Britain Hockey match highlights: Playing with just 10 players, India edged out Great Britain in a tense penalty shootout on Sunday (August 4) to advance to the semifinals. The match had ended 1-1 after regulation time (120 minutes), but Harmanpreet Singh-led India secured a 4-2 victory in the shootout.

The Men in Blue are now just a single win away from securing a second consecutive Olympic medal. They will face either Germany or Argentina in the semifinals.

The first quarter was dramatic, with India and Great Britain tied 0-0. In the second quarter, India faced a significant setback when Amit Rohidas received a red card, reducing the team to 10 players for the remainder of the match.

Despite this challenge, captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a penalty corner goal to give India a 1-0 lead. However, Great Britain quickly equalized through Lee Morton. The score was 1-1 at the end of the second quarter, with India losing their lead at halftime.

Great Britain were on the attack and looked dangerous in the third quarter but failed to take the lead. The score remained tied 1-1 at the end of the third quarter.

After a tense and hard-fought match that ended 1-1 in regulation time, the result was decided by a shootout to determine the semifinalists.

At Tokyo 2020, India had faced Great Britain in the quarterfinals, where the Manpreet Singh-led team won 3-1 and went on to secure a bronze medal.

Earlier, in a historic pre-quarterfinal match, India men’s hockey team secured a 3-2 victory over Tokyo Games silver medalists Australia. This win marked India’s first triumph over Australia in the Olympics in 52 years, with their last victory dating back to the 1972 Munich Olympics.

India’s win over Australia enabled them to finish second in Pool B, behind the reigning Olympic champions Belgium. Meanwhile, Great Britain, ranked world No. 2, ended third in Pool A.

The Indian hockey team secured three wins in the group stage, defeating New Zealand, Ireland, and Australia. Before defeating Australia, India men’s hockey team dropped points in their matches against defending champions Belgium, losing 2-1, and Argentina, drawing 1-1.

In the other quarterfinals, Belgium will face Spain, Australia will compete against the Netherlands, and Germany will go up against Argentina.
