Aurora police said a man shot and killed himself following a domestic-related shooting on Charles Street in Aurora early Monday morning that left one woman seriously injured.

The woman, 43, was shot and is currently in a local hospital in serious condition, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department on Monday.

Officials said the man fled the scene of the Charles Street shooting and was pulled over in Wilmington, where he shot and killed himself after he was pulled over by police, according to the release.

“Based on information available at this time, detectives determined this is a domestic-related issue and there is no threat to the community,” officials said in the release.

The man’s identity is not being disclosed until his next of kin can be notified, according to the release.

Officials said that, at around 7:30 a.m., Aurora police officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance in the 700 block of Charles Street. A caller to 911 reported that there was a man with a gun inside the home, the release said.

When officers arrived, they heard a gunshot from inside the home, according to the release. A woman came out the front door and said she was shot, officials said.

The woman was given aid by the officers, then she was turned over to Aurora Fire Department paramedics, who transported her to a local hospital, according to the release.

As more officers responded to the scene to establish a secure perimeter around the home, the man fled the scene, officials said.

Officials said that police agencies across the state were notified that the man had fled in a vehicle within minutes of a shooting, and using that information, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle at around 10:30 a.m.

The man was pulled over in a traffic stop in the 2100 block of Cottage Road in Wilmington, according to the release. Officials said that, after being pulled over, the man exited his vehicle and fired a weapon at himself, taking his own life, according to the release.

According to the release, an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday by the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Officials said the investigation into the incident remains active and urged anyone with information to call the Aurora Police Department Investigations Division at 630-256-5500.
