Recently renovated Winnetka mansion once owned by Jewel CEO to be listed for nearly $7 million

A recently renovated, vintage six-bedroom Winnetka mansion will be listed on Wednesday for just under $7 million.

Built in 1938 and designed by architect Solon Spencer Beman, the 13-room colonial-style mansion recently was redesigned by Chicago-based J. Lawton Thies Architects.

The mansion also has an impressive ownership pedigree. In its early years, it was owned by noted grain broker Edwin Taylor Maynard, who died in 1953, and it later was owned for more than 35 years by Donald S. Perkins, who was chairman and CEO of grocer Jewel Companies for a decade. Perkins, who died in 2015, sold the mansion in 2013 for $2.68 million to an opaque land trust.

Set on a 1.33-acre property, the mansion was renovated by its current owners, who replaced an attached garage and a detached garage with a new attached garage. The owners also placed a new kitchen and some new bedrooms where the old attached garage had been, and then turned the old kitchen space — in the front of the mansion — into a family room.

The 13-room mansion has six full bathrooms, three half baths, custom handcrafted French doors, restored paneling and millwork in the living room, dining room and library, a conservatory that overlooks the garden, Ralph Lauren light fixtures and built-in bookshelves from O’Brien Harris Cabinets. The mansion also has a butler’s pantry, a working pantry and a brand-new white kitchen that has custom-designed O’Brien Harris cabinets, Borghini marble countertops and backsplashes, Waterworks faucets, a 71-inch La Cornue range and integrated appliances like dual Miele dishwashers and Sub-Zero refrigeration units.

The mansion’s lower level has a sitting room and a recreation and media room with high ceilings, integrated seating and a billiards area, while the second-floor primary bedroom suite has an oval-vaulted bedroom, his and hers closets and dressing rooms and a marble bathroom with high-end fittings. The mansion’s other bedrooms have detailed millwork, tray ceilings and marble en-suite or Jack-and-Jill bathrooms. The two-story garage wing has space for three cars, heated floors, water-resistant wall construction, integrated high ceilings and an office.

Outside on the property are a brand-new pool and spa from Boilini Co. with custom tile and French blue plastering, pool decking that is cut Lannon stone, a guesthouse, raised gardens with cut Lannon stone edging and reclaimed street pavers, tailored patio areas off the living spaces, antique brick garden walls, and heated snowmelt driveways and walkways that are made of New York Bluestone, tumbled granite and chip-and-seal gravel.

In all, the property has about 12,187 square feet of living space, with about 9,100 square feet above grade.

The mansion has won multiple awards, including the 2021 Winnetka Landmark Preservation Award.

“This is an above and beyond, five-star renovation and it’s truly a masterpiece of execution with no expense spared,” listing agent Jena Radnay of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate told Elite Street. “This is turnkey restoration perfection, from the timeless lime-stained Chicago common (brick) to the antique bronze restored hardware. It’s one of the finest homes in Winnetka.”

The mansion had a $51,127 property tax bill in the 2021 tax year.
