West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal will be removed from his position.

The announcement comes shortly after the West Bengal CM concluded a meeting with the junior doctors, protesting over the rape and death of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

“In view of the demand of junior doctors, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal has said in the meeting that he is ready to resign. At 4 pm, Vineet will hand over the responsibility to the new CP,” Mamata Banerjee said in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

According to a report in NDTV, the CM announced that she had agreed to three of the five demands of the protesting doctors, which are removing two top officials of the health department and the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

She further said that a committee headed by chief secretary will look into demands of agitating junior doctors.

“No punitive action will be taken against protesting doctors,” the CM added.

Earlier today, a delegation of around 30 junior doctors arrived at Banerjee’s residence at 6.20 pm, escorted by a police pilot vehicle. The meeting, initially scheduled for 5 pm, began two hours later, at 7 pm.
