A weather system blowing into the area, mainly carrying rain, is expected to bring the season’s first snowflakes as temperatures drop into the 30s, weather officials said.
Rainfall is possible Sunday afternoon into the evening and is expected to change over into snow, said National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Birk.
“It’s not a big deal,” said Birk, “But there might be slushy grass and walkways with less than an inch of flakes.”
Officials expect temperatures to reach the high 50s Thursday, with showers and thunderstorms possible in the overnight hours, continuing into Friday.
Rain is likely Saturday afternoon, with mostly cloudy conditions and a high of about 50 degrees. Before 3 a.m., temperatures are expected to dip to a low of about 35 degrees, making way for a mix of rain and snow. The chances of precipitation Saturday are 90%, officials said.
Current conditions at O’Hare and Midway airports are partly cloudy at 55 degrees.
Winds are 5 to 10 mph with gusts expected around 20 mph Thursday overnight, and showers and possible thunderstorms are expected between midnight and 3 a.m., National Weather Service officials said.

Wind gusts were forecast to increase overnight when there is a 90% chance of showers.
Lake effect snow is possible Sunday night through Monday night with temperatures in the 30s.
