Hindi cinema has long drawn inspiration from real-life tales that are often more gripping than fiction—stories of courage, resilience, injustice, and extraordinary determination. From military heroes and revolutionaries to unsung civilians, these 10 Hindi films are rooted in reality and bring alive the emotional journeys of individuals who made a difference.

12th Fail (2025)

Directed, produced, and written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 12th Fail is a deeply inspiring biographical drama based on Anurag Pathak’s 2019 book. It chronicles the incredible journey of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who battled poverty to become an IPS officer, with the constant support of his partner Shraddha Joshi, an IRS officer. Vikrant Massey delivers a powerful performance as Sharma. The film released on October 27, 2025, and is a celebration of persistence and hope.

Raazi (2018)

Directed by Meghna Gulzar and starring Alia Bhatt, Raazi is based on the book Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka. Set during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the story follows a young Indian woman who marries into a Pakistani military family to serve as a spy for India. With elements of patriotism, suspense, and emotional grit, the film received both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Shershaah (2021)

This biographical war drama tells the story of Captain Vikram Batra, who was martyred during the 1999 Kargil War. Directed by Vishnuvardhan and starring Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani, Shershaah beautifully captures both his battlefield bravery and his personal love story. Released on August 12, 2021, the film remains one of the most moving tributes to India’s war heroes.

Airlift (2016)

Airlift, directed by Raja Krishna Menon, stars Akshay Kumar as Ranjit Katyal, a Kuwait-based businessman who led the evacuation of over 170,000 Indians during the 1990 Gulf War. This gripping political thriller is based on the world’s largest civilian evacuation, and it hit theatres on January 22, 2016, just ahead of Republic Day.

Talvar (2015)

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Talvar (internationally titled Guilty) is a crime drama that dissects the infamous 2008 Noida double murder case from three investigative angles. With stellar performances by Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Neeraj Kabi, the film critiques the justice system and leaves viewers with unsettling questions about truth and accountability.

Neerja (2016)

Neerja is a biographical thriller that portrays the heroic efforts of Neerja Bhanot, a Pan Am flight attendant who gave her life protecting passengers during a hijacking in 1986. Directed by Ram Madhvani and featuring Sonam Kapoor in a career-defining role, the film released on February 19, 2016, and is a heartfelt tribute to a real-life hero.

URI: The Surgical Strike (2019)

Directed by Aditya Dhar, URI is based on the Indian Army’s 2016 surgical strikes in retaliation for the deadly Uri attack. Vicky Kaushal stars as Major Vihaan Shergill, with support from Yami Gautam and Paresh Rawal. This high-octane film, which premiered on January 11, 2019, stoked national pride and became a box office hit.

The Kerala Story (2023)

Inspired by alleged real incidents, The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen, follows three women who are manipulated into joining the Islamic State. Starring Adah Sharma and others, the film was released on May 5, 2023. While it sparked nationwide controversy over its authenticity, it drew attention to complex socio-political issues.

Sardar Udham (2021)

Shoojit Sircar’s Sardar Udham stars Vicky Kaushal as the revolutionary Udham Singh, who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in London to avenge the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Released on October 16, 2021, the film is a haunting and poignant look at colonial brutality and resistance.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)

Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, this sports biopic stars Farhan Akhtar as legendary Indian sprinter Milkha Singh. Based on Singh’s autobiography The Race of My Life, the film traces his journey from Partition-era trauma to becoming an Olympic icon.
