Memorial Day weekend didn’t only mark the kickoff of summer, it also meant road construction season in the south and southwest suburbs is heading into high gear.

Road projects are already underway or poised to begin in several area communities, with some work picking up from last year and others slated to finish up in the coming months, according to the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways.

Many of the projects announced recently are along county maintained roads in the south and southwest suburbs, in addition to street patching and resurfacing taking place by municipalities.

One Cook County project underway earlier involves resurfacing 94th Avenue from 159th Street in Orland Park to 171st Street in Orland Hills.

Work will include replacing curbs and gutters and is supposed to be completed later this summer, according to the county.

Also, in Orland Park and Palos Heights, work is expected to be completed this summer on a rehabilitation of 135th Street, between Howe Drive and Harlem Avenue.

Much of the work was finished last year, with a section of about 700 feet west of Harlem Avenue yet to wrap up, according to the county.

That will include storm sewer repairs, new curbs and gutters and an asphalt overlay, according to the county.

In Oak Forest, construction continues on 151st Street over the Boca Rio drainage ditch, where concrete box culverts are replacing existing culverts and stabilization of the ditch banks is being completed to improve water flow. Work is scheduled to wrap up later this fall, according to the county.

Work is scheduled to be completed this summer on a resurfacing of 167th Street from Kedzie Avenue to California Avenue through Hazel Crest and Markham.

Much of the work was finished during last year’s construction season, with remaining items including replacement of traffic signal detector loops and pavement markings, according to the county.

Cottage Grove Avenue is undergoing work through communities including Chicago Heights, Glenwood and Sauk Village, according to the county.

One section, from Glenwood Lansing Road to 183rd Street in Glenwood, is being resurfaced, with work scheduled to be completed this fall, according to the county.

Another section of Cottage Grove, between Sauk Trail and 17th Street, is also undergoing resurfacing, with work continuing into the fall and including asphalt resurfacing, sidewalk replacement and culvert repairs.

In Country Club Hills and Flossmoor, Flossmoor Road is being rehabilitated between Ridgeland and Kedzie avenues, including culvert repairs, with work to be completed this fall, according to the county.

Resurfacing of Glenwood Lansing Road from Illinois 394 to Burnham Avenue through Glenwood and Lynwood, is expected to be completed in the fall, with work including sidewalk replacement and traffic signal upgrades, according to the county.

Joe Orr Road, from State Street to Cottage Grove Avenue through Chicago Heights, is undergoing work that expected to be completed in the summer, including pavement work and repairs to curbs and gutters.

Vollmer Road, through Chicago Heights, Olympia Fields and Flossmoor, is also getting attention, according to the county.

Work anticipated to be completed in the fall includes asphalt resurfacing and culvert repairs between Western Avenue and Dixie Highway.
