The State/Lake “L” station in the Loop closed Monday for construction and won’t open again until 2029.

The 120-year-old station is one of the CTA’s most heavily used and serves the Purple, Pink, Brown, Orange and Pink Lines.

The station is slated to get demolished and rebuilt as part of a massive $444 million revamp the CTA and the Chicago Department of Transportation say will “improve safety, accessibility, and comfort for all riders.”

Trains won’t stop at the station during construction, with Loop riders instructed to use the nearby Clark/Lake and Washington/Wabash stations instead. Some traffic impacts are expected as well, including the limitation of Lake St. to local traffic only between Dearborn St. and Wabash Ave. Sidewalks on Lake St. and State St. will remain open to pedestrians.

The new station will feature wider platforms and new elevators for full ADA-accessibility, the agencies said.
