New Delhi: As the election date gets closer, all eyes are on Tamil Nadu — the most important state in southern India. With 39, Tamil Nadu sends the highest number of MPs to Lok Sabha from the South.

Karnataka comes in second position with 28 MPs, Andhra Pradesh with 25, Kearal with 20, and lastly, Telangana with 17.

In the 2019 elections, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance secured an overwhelming victory, winning 38 out of 39 seats, besides the lone Puducherry segment.

Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Schedule And Phases

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is yet to officially announce the schedule for the General Elections of 2024 while expectations are that the polling may be scheduled in April and May.

Though in the 2019 elections, polling in Tamil Nadu was held in a single phase, covering all seats, the 2024 elections might likely be spread across two to three phases.

Typically, polling in the southern state is concluded in the first half of the election due to a high voter turnout and effective management by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Constituencies

Tamil Nadu, with its 39 constituencies, ranks fifth in the highest number of Lok Sabha seats among states, behind Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Bihar.

Of the 39 seats, 32 are unreserved, and seven are reserved for SC candidates.

Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Candidates List

In the wake of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s dominance in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, several parties including the Indian National Congress (INC), DMK, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Samajwadi Party (SP) united under the banner of the I.N.D.I.A bloc. This decision sets the stage for a three-way contest between the NDA, I.N.D.I.A, and AIDMK in Tamil Nadu.

DMK-Congress Alliance In Tamil Nadu

The Congress on Saturday sealed a seat-sharing deal with the DMK in Tamil Nadu. As part of the broad consensus reached between the two parties, the Congress will contest nine of the 39 seats in the state while supporting the DMK and its allies in the rest.

As part of the deal reached between the two parties, the Congress will also contest one seat in Puducherry.

Addressing the media after the meeting, AICC leader KC Venugopal said, “Congress will contest elections on 9 seats in Tamil Nadu and one seat in Puducherry. On the remaining seats, we will support the candidates of DMK and alliance parties. We will win all 40 seats of Tamil Nadu.”

The senior Congress leader also exuded confidence that the I.N.D.I.A bloc will secure victory in the upcoming general elections.
