New Delhi: All government and private schools in Chengalpattu district will remain closed on Saturday as heavy rain continued to lash several parts of Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall was reported in Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Coonoor, Kothagiri and Thoothukudi districts.

Meanwhile, traffic movement was restored in 10 places on Coonoor-Mettupalayam National Highway and Kottagiri-Mettupalayam Highway after the roads were cleared of debris following landslides.

Here are the key developments:

  • Mettupalayam in Coimbatore received season’s heaviest rainfall of 37cm over the last 24 hours.
  • Several places in Coimbatore reported waterlogging, thereby, causing traffic snarls. The road near Ramanathupuram was inundated following heavy rainfall, ANI reported.
  • Indian Railways suspended train services on the Nilgiri Mountain Rail Route due to landslides. The railway track between Kallar and Runnimedu in Hillguro was blocked after mudslides in the region.
  • Nilgiri District Collector said all government and private schools will remain closed in Coonoor and Kotagiri on Friday.
  • Chennai’s Regional Meteorological Department issued warning for light to moderate rainfall to Tamil Nadu districts and Puducherry for the next three days.
  • “For the next two to three days, as far as Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry are concerned, light to moderate rainfall is expected. Heavy rainfall is expected in several districts, including Nilgiris and Coimbatore. If any change occurs, we will continue to monitor and inform you,” ANI quoted Chennai Regional Meteorological Department director Balachandran as saying.
  • The weather office has forecast heavy rainfall in Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi.
  • Meanwhile, several areas in Madurai remained inundated after the gates of Vaigai dam were opened due to heavy rainfall in the region, ANI reported.
