With roots that run deep into the subcontinent’s ancient past, Rishabhdev’s legacy continues to shape philosophical discourse, religious thought, and cultural identity to this day.
A Divine Beginning In Ayodhya
In Jainism, time is not linear but eternal, divided into cycles that stretch beyond human comprehension. At the dawn of one such cycle, Rishabhdev emerged as the first Tirthankara, a spiritual guide who lights the path of liberation. He was born in Ayodhya on the ninth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Chaitra, to King Nabhi and Queen Marudevi, figures who are also revered in Hindu texts.
He is believed to have attained nirvana at Mount Kailash on Magh Krishna Chaturdashi, marking the end of a life devoted to spiritual awakening and human upliftment. His life story, meticulously detailed in the Adipuran by Acharya Jinasena, forms the foundation of Jain teachings.
The Vishnu Connection: Rishabhdev In Hinduism
What sets Rishabhdev apart in the annals of Indian spiritual history is his presence in Hindu scriptures, particularly the Bhagavat Puran. There, he is recognized as one of the 24 incarnations of Lord Vishnu, descending to earth to instruct sages and seekers in the discipline of righteousness and renunciation.
Both Jain and Hindu traditions trace Rishabhdev’s ancestry to the Ikshvaku dynasty, the legendary lineage of kings that includes Lord Ram. He is remembered not just as a religious figure, but also as a monarch — a Kosal king — who laid the foundational structures of a civil society.
A Legacy Beyond Time
Few spiritual figures have managed to transcend the boundaries of religious identity the way Lord Rishabhdev has. His presence in the Rigved, underscores the vast span of his influence — from Vedic chants to Jain scriptures, from the teachings of Lord Vishnu to the principles of non-violence and renunciation.
