Top Tech News Today: Samsung Galaxy Fifth-Gen Foldables Launched, OnePlus’ First Foldable Phone

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 — the latest foldable offerings from the South Korean tech giant are now official. President and Head of ‘Mobile eXperience Business’ at Samsung Electronics TM Roh introduced the two new foldables at the Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event, held in Seoul, South Korea. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover display, dubbed Flex Window, which is touted to be 3.78 times larger than Galaxy Z Flip 4. The Galaxy Z Fold 4, on the other hand, sports a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED cover screen.

We all know that the competition in the foldable space is heating up and OnePlus is also gearing up to foray into it. Now, OnePlus has given a peak into its first foldable which was hinted at during the OnePlus 11 launch event earlier this year. The handset maker in a tweet posted: “We OPEN when others FOLD” which is a reference to the company’s upcoming foldable smartphone. There is no official confirmation on the device’s name but it would be purportedly called “OnePlus Open”. It is being said that the foldable device could be similar to the Oppo Find N2. It is to be noted that OnePlus and Oppo are both part of Chinese tech behemoth BBK Electronics. OnePlus, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023, had confirmed that its first foldable phone would be launched in the second half of the year.

Nick Clegg, the President of Meta Global Affairs held a series of meetings with Union ministers in Delhi on Wednesday. During this meeting with the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, he discussed the “safety of users on WhatsApp and open source Llama model.” While during the meeting with Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Clegg deliberated about “India’s talent base, tech-innovations, growing spirit of enterprise as well as skilling efforts.”

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is expected to convene via videoconferencing on August 2 to make a final decision on imposing a 28 per cent GST on online gaming, casinos, and horse racing, as per media reports based on source inputs. Despite assurances from officials that there will be no backtracking on the proposal, certain aspects, such as whether the 28 per cent GST levy should apply to the entry value or each bet, will be addressed during the meeting.

The Federal Court in Australia has ruled that Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, must pay fines totalling A$20 million (roughly $14 million) for unlawfully collecting user data through a smartphone app that claimed to protect privacy without disclosing its data collection activities. As reported by Reuters, the court also ordered Meta, along with its subsidiaries Facebook Israel and the now-defunct app Onavo, to pay A$400,000 in legal costs to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which initiated the civil lawsuit.
