Trader Joe’s, the popular grocery chain known for its unique original products and affordable prices, will open three new stores in Los Angeles next year.
According to the company’s website, the new locations will be in Northridge, Sherman Oaks and Tarzana in the San Fernando Valley.
The website lists the planned addresses for each storefront but does not specify when they will open. A Trader Joe’s spokesperson confirmed to Nexstar Media Group that the new locations are expected to open next year.
The chain intends to open at least nine other stores in 2025, including in Seattle and New York, as part of a nationwide expansion.
Earlier this year, the company confirmed it would open eight new store locations in Southern California, including in South Pasadena, Northridge, Sherman Oaks, Santa Clarita, Ladera Ranch, Murrieta, Poway and Santee.
The rate of openings “is faster than it’s been in the last few years,” a Trader Joe’s spokesperson told The Times in May.
The planned expansion comes as grocery stores across Southern California and the country compete to win over budget-conscious consumers. Inflation has driven up supermarket prices in recent years, causing everyday Americans to cut back on discretionary spending and seek out bargains.
Food prices are expected to increase at a slower rate in 2025 but will remain on the rise. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of a dozen large eggs jumped from $2.14 in November 2023 to $3.65 in November 2024. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that food-at-home prices will rise .8% in 2025.
A 2022 Times survey of staple items at popular grocery chains in Southern California found that Trader Joe’s had the lowest prices.
The privately held chain is owned by German supermarket chain operator Aldi Nord and currently has more than 540 locations in 42 states and Washington, D.C.
In an October episode of the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast, marketing executives Tara Miller and Matt Sloan said the company considers population density, accessibility and parking infrastructure when looking at sites for new stores.
Community campaigns to bring a new store to an area don’t influence expansion plans, they said.
“We are excited when people are excited about us but that’s really not what’s driving the decisions,” Miller said. “We are growing at a pretty good rate right now, adding more and more stores.”
Trader Joe’s opened its first location in Pasadena in 1967 and remains headquartered in Monrovia. The chain has gained a cult-like following for its branded merchandise, wide array of frozen options and well-priced produce.
A spokesperson for Trader Joe’s could not be immediately reached for comment.
