Madhya Pradesh, the heartland of India, boasts a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the ancient ruins of Khajuraho to the serene landscapes of Bandhavgarh National Park, the state offers a diverse range of experiences for every traveler making it an offbeat multispecialty destination of first choice.

This interview with Mr. Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Culture and Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board aims to shed light on the state’s recent initiatives and achievements in the tourism sector. By understanding the strategies and efforts undertaken by the tourism board, we can gain valuable insights into Madhya Pradesh’s commitment to promoting itself as a top-tier destination for both domestic and international tourists.

How has the recent focus on religious tourism impacted Madhya Pradesh’s tourism industry?

Religious tourism has been instrumental in the growth of Madhya Pradesh’s tourism sector, with significant pilgrimage sites like Ujjain, Omkareshwar, and Mahakaleshwar attracting devotees from across India and beyond. Our ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and amenities have led to a notable increase in visitors seeking spiritual and cultural experiences. This focus has not only boosted local economies but also deepened appreciation for the state’s rich heritage. As a result, Madhya Pradesh has become a key player in India’s spiritual tourism landscape, providing travelers with a “deep spiritual and religious tourism authentic experience in Madhya Pradesh.”

What are the key strategies to attract international tourists to Madhya Pradesh, particularly from emerging markets?

Madhya Pradesh is actively working to attract international tourists by emphasizing its unique selling points, including rich cultural heritage, historical sites, wildlife sanctuaries, and adventure activities. We are implementing targeted marketing campaigns that resonate with audiences in emerging markets like Southeast Asia and the Middle East, where interest in Indian tourism is growing. By participating in international travel fairs and roadshows, we engage directly with potential travelers and travel agents, offering them firsthand experience of our offerings.

Additionally, we are developing tailored travel packages that cater to international tourists’ interests, such as adventure tourism, wellness retreats, and culinary experiences. Collaborating with local and international tour operators is crucial for enhancing accessibility and promoting special offers. By improving infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, and creating multilingual resources, we aim to provide a seamless travel experience, positioning Madhya Pradesh as an attractive destination for international visitors.

What are the challenges and opportunities in promoting Madhya Pradesh as a sustainable tourism destination?

Promoting Madhya Pradesh as a sustainable tourism destination brings both challenges and opportunities. A key challenge is balancing the preservation of the state’s rich natural and cultural heritage while managing increasing tourist numbers, requiring a strong focus on responsible tourism practices to reduce environmental impact. Enhancing infrastructure and connectivity to offbeat locations is another hurdle, crucial for eco-tourism growth. However, Madhya Pradesh’s abundant wildlife reserves, biodiversity, and UNESCO heritage sites provide excellent opportunities. By promoting eco-friendly initiatives such as homestays, community-based tourism, and partnerships with local artisans, we can offer travelers unique, authentic experiences. With global interest in sustainable tourism on the rise, Madhya Pradesh can leverage this trend to attract environmentally conscious travelers. “Madhya Pradesh’s deep efforts in Responsible Tourism, empowered by community development, have created a new benchmark in Indian Tourism.”

What were the key outcomes and takeaways from the recent IATO Annual Convention held in Bhopal?

The IATO Annual Convention in Bhopal was a resounding success, providing a valuable platform for networking, collaboration, and showcasing Madhya Pradesh’s tourism offerings. The convention facilitated the formation of new partnerships between Madhya Pradesh Tourism and travel trade professionals from all over India. Can you provide an update on the recently launched First Women-Run Handloom Cafe in Madhya Pradesh?

The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has launched the Handloom Café in Pranpur Village, Chanderi, as part of its initiative to make the state a safe destination for solo women travelers. Entirely operated by women, this pioneering project is managed by the “Sakhi Saheli Lok Kalyan Sangh,” a registered women’s group, with specialized training provided by IHM Bhopal. The café not only creates employment but also empowers women with essential skills, financial independence, and confidence, improving their quality of life. Additionally, it promotes the state’s rich textile heritage by showcasing local artisans’ craftsmanship, offering visitors a unique blend of dining, culture, and shopping experiences.

What are the future plans of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board to further promote the state as a tourist destination?

Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) is committed to positioning the state as a leading tourist destination through a multifaceted approach. This includes developing new tourism products, enhancing infrastructure, and improving connectivity. We are actively exploring niche tourism opportunities such as wellness, adventure, and culinary tourism. By participating in international exhibitions like ITB Berlin, ATM Dubai, IFTM Top Resa, Paris, WTM London, and JATA Tourism Expo Japan, and organizing roadshows globally, we engage with travel professionals to promote Madhya Pradesh.
