Two people were injured in an early morning stabbing attack at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton, Canada. Police have arrested a man in connection with the attack.
The attack took place at around 5 am local time on Friday. Police have not identified the suspect or specified a motive, BBC reported.
The Edmonton Police Service said it first received reports around 4:49 am of a man walking in traffic on a highway. Around 15 minutes later, police received calls about a stabbing inside the gurdwara.
According to the report, police said a man had entered the gurdwara and attempted to access the prayer area before being confronted by staff.
The suspect was subsequently arrested after two people were injured in the attack.
PM Carney Condemns Attack
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the incident and expressed support for those affected.
“The attack at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton this morning is appalling. My thoughts are with the two people who were injured and the wider community that is shaken by this terrible event. No one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship. I want to thank the Edmonton Police Service for their swift response,” Carney said in a post on X.
Threat Calls To Sikh Gurdwaras Under Investigation
The incident comes after police confirmed last week that they were investigating threatening calls made to two Sikh gurdwaras in Calgary, located two hours south of Edmonton.
The World Sikh Organisation, based in Canada, said the attack was deeply troubling and took place against the backdrop of rising anti-Sikh hate across the country.
Police have not yet provided details about a possible motive for Friday’s stabbing.
“This confrontation then escalated, and two male patrons of the Gurdwara were stabbed. Thankfully, quick-acting witnesses intervened and detained the man,” Acting Inspector Eric Stewart said at a press conference Friday.
