UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale was ranked as one of the top hospitals in the country, according to a study by PINC AI, a data engine that tracks more than 2,600 health care systems in the US.

This year marked the 30th edition of PINC AI’s study, and the second appearance of UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale, its first time listed being in 2017.

“In our continuous pursuit of excellence, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale is honored to be recognized as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals. This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to providing exceptional health care to our community,” Adam Maycock, President and CEO of UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale, said in a statement.

The study tracks inpatient mortality, readmission rates and cost to patients among other criteria to compile its annual rankings.

Hospitals on the list reportedly had 31% fewer deaths, 9% fewer patient complications, 39% fewer health care associated infections, roughly 20% lower inpatient expenses per discharge and an average half day shorter length of stay than other hospitals, according to a news release from UChicago Medicine.

“The transparent and nonbiased measures this study provides, helps leaders make informed decisions for change, and proves that UChicago Medicine AdventHealth excels across a range of core performance indicators, which can directly lead to significantly higher quality patient outcomes, with fewer readmissions and complications,” Leigh Anderson, Premier’s CEO and the leader of PINC AI, said in a statement.

Five other Chicagoland hospitals, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Edward Hospital in Naperville, Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Rush Oak Park Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield were listed in PINC AI’s top 100.

The nonprofit Leapfrog Group gave UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale an “A” safety rating earlier this year; only 26% of Illinois hospitals earned A’s in 2023, according to Leapfrog’s grading system.

Safety grades and hospital rankings are often touted by health care institutions to attract new patients and used as a status symbol, but they are not without controversy. Rating systems like the U.S. News and World Report, known for their university and hospital rankings, regularly come under fire for their methodology.

“It’s something that we keep as a priority,” said Elmhurst Hospital President Dr. Kimberley Darey, of safety in an interview with the Chicago Tribune earlier this year. “It’s something that we have ingrained in our culture.”
