New Delhi: Indian comedian Vir Das made history when he took home the International Emmy Award for Comedy. The award was presented to him in a ceremony in New York, and it was the first of many nominations he would get. The actor/comedian won for his stand-up special ‘Vir Das: Landing,’ which was streamed on Netflix. Das received his second nomination and first victory this year. The third season of the UK sitcom ‘Derry Girls’ tied with the Netflix stand-up special ‘Vir Das: Landing’ for Best Comedy category. The ‘For India’ stand-up special earned him a nomination in the same category back in 2021.

Celebrating his extraordinary performance, Indian dairy company Amul recognised Vir Das with a lovely and funny artwork. An animated Das was shown in the Amul ad, clutching the Emmy trophy in one hand and a piece of buttered bread in the other, with the tagline “Our Emmynent Comedian!”

Vir Das was profoundly touched by this act of kindness, and his reaction was emotional. While the Emmy itself didn’t make him emotional, he was moved to tears by the Amul tribute. Taking to social media, he wrote, “Didn’t cry about the Emmy. Saw this. Teared up. To come home to something like this, for someone like me. Thank you.”

Vir Das said that winning an Emmy seemed like a dream and that it was a huge triumph for Indian comedy as a whole.

The comedian’s monologue Two Indias caused a major uproar when it was presented at the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington, DC, in 2021. During the monologue, he discussed polarising issues such as the government’s reaction to Covid-19, pollution, farmers’ protests, cricket, and rape.
