An Uptown woman has been charged with attempted first-degree murder for a shooting aboard a CTA Red Line train Wednesday morning.

Indya Smith, 23, is accused of shooting a 33-year-old rider in the shoulder after spitting on him while quarreling with him on the “L” train in Uptown at approximately 8:40 a.m.

The victim was taken to Ascension St. Francis hospital in Evanston, where he was in fair condition, police said.

Smith was also charged with aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a weapon on the CTA. She was arrested by police officers in the 5800 block of North Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood about 20 minutes after the shooting.

The shooting during Wednesday morning rush hour came as concerns about violent crimes on the CTA mount. A September Tribune analysis, sparked by the fatal shooting of four people on the Blue Line on Labor Day, showed that reported violent crimes on public transit have stubbornly remained above prepandemic levels.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
