U.S. stock indexes opened higher, on course to extend a strong start to the latest quarter, while a falling dollar and government bond yields offered investors some tentative relief.

The S&P 500 rose 1.6% Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.3% and the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 2.2%. The moves come a day after the major indexes closed sharply higher, giving a positive start to the fourth quarter following sharp losses over recent months.
