Authorities have charged a 45-year-old man with the 2021 Independence Day slaying of a 29-year-old man in the city’s Old Town neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

Officers arrested Jason Cribbs on Thursday morning at the West Side branch court on West Flournoy Avenue, police said. Cribbs had been scheduled to appear at the courthouse that day for a pending felony drug case, according to court records.

He was later charged with first-degree murder after he was identified as the gunman who fatally shot the victim, later identified as Dimontie Wallace. Wallace was gunned down in the 200 block of West Division Street, police said.

Police did not immediately provide any additional details on the case, but Cribbs is expected to appear before a judge for a detention hearing Saturday afternoon.
