Suspect confronted while robbing car fires gun at Carpentersville resident

A Carpentersville resident faced gunfire early Tuesday morning after confronting a person they saw rummaging through their car, police said.

The incident occurred sometime about 3:50 a.m. when the resident spotted the suspect inside their unlocked vehicle in the 300 block of Green Street in the village’s Old Town area, according to a news release from Carpentersville Deputy Chief Kevin Stankowitz

When confronted, the suspect pulled a gun and fired multiple shots in the direction of the resident, the release said. The resident was not injured but four rounds struck their vehicle and one struck a house.

The suspect fled on foot, but despite setting up a perimeter, deploying drones and bringing in a K-9 unit, police were unable to make an arrest, the release said.

In the release, Stankowitz said officials “believe there is no immediate threat to the public” resulting from the incident, which remains under investigation.

There have been four vehicle break-ins in the Old Town area since March 1, according to the release. Police are urging residents to stay vigilant and to lock their cars.

Residents are also urged not to confront suspects but to report suspicious activity or people to the police by calling 847-428-8784. Information like a detailed description and a direction of travel can help assist officers when checking out possible crimes, the release said.
