The recent U.S. stock rally fizzled Thursday, as major indexes turned negative in afternoon trading.

Since late June, investors began to dip their toes back into buying speculative companies. On Wednesday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite entered a bull market, meaning it rose more than 20% from its June low.
